The Best Science Fiction of the Year 3 by Terry Carr

The award was inaugurated in 1971, and was originally intended to provide suggestions and recommendations for the Hugo Awards.

Originally a poll of Locus subscribers only, voting is now open to anyone, but the votes of subscribers count twice as much as the votes of non-subscribers. In addition to the plaques awarded to the winners, publishers of winning works are honored with certificates, which is unique in the field. The awards are presented at an annual banquet.

The Locus Awards are an annual set of literary awards voted on by readers of the science fiction and fantasy magazine Locus, a monthly magazine based in Oakland, California. 'A Rite of Spring' was nominated for the 1977 Nebula Award for Best Novelette and placed fourth in the 1978 Locus Poll Award for Best Short Fiction.The best science fiction, fantasy and horror of the previous year 'The Family Monkey' placed seventh in the 1978 Locus Poll Award for Best Novella. 'Aztecs' was nominated for the 1977 Nebula Award for Best Novella and the 1978 Hugo Award for Best Novella, and placed third in the 1978 Locus Poll Award for Best Novella. 'The House of Compassionate Sharers' was nominated for the 1978 Ditmar Award for Best International Long Fiction and placed twelfth in the 1978 Locus Poll Award for Best Short Fiction. 'Stardance' won the 1977 Nebula Award for Best Novella and the 1978 Hugo Award for Best Novella, and placed first in the 1978 Locus Poll Award for Best Novella. The stories were previously published in 1977 in the magazines Analog Science Fiction/Science Fact, Cosmos Science Fiction and Fantasy, and The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, and the anthologies Orbit 19, 2076: The American Tricentennial, New Voices in Science Fiction, and Universe 7. The book collects nine novellas, novelettes and short stories by various science fiction authors, with an introduction, notes and concluding essays by Carr and Charles N. It was first published in paperback by Del Rey Books in July 1978, and in hardcover under the slightly variant title Best Science Fiction of the Year 7 by Gollancz in November 1978. The Best Science Fiction of the Year #7 is an anthology of science fiction short stories edited by Terry Carr, the seventh volume in a series of sixteen.
